The Power of Story Behind Recovery Wear
A Rapidly Growing Recovery Wear Market
The recovery wear market has been expanding rapidly as consumers become increasingly interested in improving recovery, reducing fatigue, and enhancing sleep quality. Industry forecasts suggest that the recovery wear category alone could reach a market size of approximately JPY 170 billion by 2030. Among the pioneers of this field is VENEX Co., Ltd., a company that has helped define the category itself.
VENEX has remained committed to domestic production, not only in garment manufacturing but also in the development of its yarns and fabrics. The company’s journey, however, was far from easy. Because the products utilize specially developed mineral-infused fibers, VENEX faced repeated rejection from potential manufacturing partners before eventually finding factories willing to take on the challenge. Stories such as these have become an important part of the company’s history and identity.
A Mission to Redefine Rest and Recovery
As awareness of recovery wear has grown, VENEX has welcomed the increased public interest in health, rest, and recovery. At the same time, the expanding market has led to the emergence of numerous lower-priced alternatives, creating a growing need to clearly communicate what makes the VENEX brand unique.
Rather than relying solely on traditional mass-media advertising, VENEX sought a communication approach that felt authentically “VENEX.” In response, Owl proposed producing a documentary-style short program to tell the brand’s story in a more engaging and credible way. The concept was ultimately realized through a partnership with Discovery Channel, resulting in a five-minute documentary feature that was broadcast on subscription television and later adapted into shorter versions for YouTube advertising.
The content resonated not only with prospective customers but also with existing users of VENEX products. Viewers commented that the film helped them better understand the brand they had chosen and that they shared the video with friends who were considering purchasing recovery wear. What began as a branding initiative ultimately played an unexpected role in strengthening customer relationships and loyalty as well.
Continuing the Challenge After 20 Years
In 2025, VENEX celebrated its 20th anniversary. As part of the milestone, the company wanted to create content that would express gratitude to customers, employees, and business partners while reflecting on its journey to date. Owl was entrusted with producing a special commemorative video project.
One of the key initiatives was a roundtable discussion featuring the company’s three founders. Filmed in a premium relaxation room at a business hotel in Atsugi, where VENEX is headquartered, the founders spoke candidly about the company’s early days, challenges, lessons learned, and aspirations for the future while wearing VENEX recovery wear. The result was a highly authentic and engaging piece of content that captured the spirit of the brand and the people behind it.
The Result
For VENEX, communicating functional benefits alone was no longer enough. As the market matured and competitors increased, what truly differentiated the brand was the story behind its products—the persistence, conviction, and vision that had driven the company since its founding. Owl helped transform that story into content capable of deepening customer understanding while strengthening emotional connection with the brand.
